Jakarta, 24 July 2019 - The United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC), the Assocation of Indonesia Municipalities (APEKSI) and the European Union (EU) are jointly organising a second national training on 24-25 July 2019 in Jakarta, to strengthen the capacity of local governments in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of the LOCALISE SDGs (Leadership, Ownership and Capacities for Agenda 2030 Local Implementation and Stakeholders Empowerment on Sustainable Development Goals) project, the two-day training brings together 30 local government officials from 16 provinces and 14 cities across Indonesia.
This national training, which is also supported by Tanoto Foundation, focuses on how to develop and advocate conducive systems and environment to implement the Agenda 2030. The training will use various learning methodologies and approach from UCLG Learning such as Localise SDG Module, peer to peer learning, shared-learning, and also knowledge product and case study from LOCALISE SDGs, LOCALISE SDGs partners and related ministries.
With the theme "Local Government Strengthening for SDGs Implementation", the training was officially opened by Mrs Indah Sri Wibi Nastiti, Executive Director of APEKSI, Mr Hans Farnhammer, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Indonesia, and Mr Satrijo Tanudjojo, CEO of Global Tanoto Foundation.
“Local Governments are key players in the implementation of SDGs in Indonesia”, said Mrs Bernadia Tjandradewi, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC. On the other hand, based on series of focus group discussions since 2016, it appeared that awareness on the importance of SDGs among local governments and their associations needs to be improved. There is also a need to reach out directly to local governments and to get them engaged by explaining with their own realities what SDGs entail for them so there will be no constraint in developing Local Action Plan (RAD),” added Mrs Tjandradewi.
“APEKSI sees SDGs as a way to make municipalities realise the importance of sustainable development in planning development since SDG goals are comphensive, and emphasise partnership in reaching the goals,“ explained Mrs Indah Sri Wibi Nastiti, Executive Director of APEKSI.
“The European Union and the Government of Indonesia are fully committed to SDGs,” stated Mr Hans Farnhammer, Head of Cooperation, the EU Delegation to Indonesia. “Promoting inclusive and sustainable development has a central place in our development agenda with Indonesia. The EU will continue to support the Indonesian Government in implementating the ambitious, transformative and universal 2030 Agenda that aims at delivering poverty eradication and sustainable development for all,” he added.
‘‘Based on our portfolio related to Indonesia's education system, it is one of the most complex system in the world, where there are more than 50 million students, 2.6 million teachers, and 250 thousand schools. We realize that to improve the quality of education in Indonesia, collaboration with other parties is needed, in accordance with the principle of inclusiveness from SDGs that development is shared responsibility of all stakeholders. Therefore, Tanoto Foundation acts as a catalyst for partnerships, both with the government, the private sector, and other development partners to generate progressive ideas for broader and deeper impacts," said Mr Satrijo Tanudjojo, CEO of Global Tanoto Foundation.
